Make A Difference

MINDFUL’s mission is to fill the gap in treatment towards mental health by educating parents, youth and health professionals on the importance of diet and nutrition.

Case For Support

From ADHD and depression, to anxiety, bi-polar and schizophrenia, mental illness affects as many as 1 in every 5 children/youth, making it the single most disabling group of disorders worldwide. More often than not, medical professionals trained in pharmacology, with little or no knowledge of complementary treatments, diagnose and prescribe psychotropic drugs for children, as young as five years old. This is a standard approach to mental health treatment without first considering factors like diet, nutrition, allergies and exercise. While medication can offer relief from symptoms, it can also cause troubling side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, even increased risk of psychosis suicide and addiction. In response to the growing crisis in children’s mental health the ISF launched Mindful, an education network that is delivering:

  • Hard to find, much needed, concrete and user- friendly online resources and support for parents, youth and health professionalsabout the role diet and nutrition play in preventing and managing children’s mental health issues.
  • Accredited continuing medical education courses (CME) and conferencesdesigned to educate physicians and frontline health care professionals
  • Education/public awareness eventsthroughout Canadato reduce stigma and provide educationon role that diet and nutrition play in support children’s mental health

To help research, develop and maintain the Mindful network over the next five years, we launched a $1.5 million fundraisingcampaign.
